The Orkney Islands Council this week awarded the contract for the world’s shortest scheduled flight. Scottish airline Loganair has retained the right to operate the route from Westray to Papa Westray, a distance of 2.8km.
The flight usually lasts less than two minutes but with a following wind it can be completed in as little as 47 seconds.
The inter-island service for the general Orkey region has been in service since 1967, with return flights for the short route being offered in 2011 following much interest from tourists keen to island-hop. The new contract will start in April and will last for three years, with the option of a year-long extension.
The runways at both Westray and Papa Westray have been extended to comply with new take-off regulations.
